DTE Energy to Install Detroit's First Solar Energy Trash Compactors

DTE Energy installed seven Bigbelly units, the city of Detroit's first smart, solar-powered trash compactor and recycling units. The pilot program supports the company's Energize Detroit neighborhood revitalization initiative. Waste Management of Michigan installed the units and will maintain them for DTE Energy. The solar panel on the unit extracts energy from the sun to continuously charge the battery powering the system. When the unit needs to be emptied the smart system sends a signal to Waste Management of Michigan.

Siemens to Modernize Power Distribution Grids in Five Cities in North India

Siemens is modernizing the power distribution grids of the cities of Amritsar, Jallandhar, Ludhiana, Dehradun, and Faridabad in northern India. As part of the modernization, Siemens will implement its Spectrum Power network control system and equip the grid with SCADA/DMS functions for monitoring and control. The customers are three utility companies, Punjab State Power Corporation, Uttarakhand Power Corporation, and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam. The order volume amounts to a total of approximately 11 million.

Vivint Solar Teams Up With Google for Project Sunroof

Vivint Solar teamed up with Google for the newly announced Project Sunroof, a new online tool created by Google that provides homeowners with custom solar information for their home. The tool uses high-resolution aerial mapping to help calculate a roof's solar energy potential, without having to climb up a ladder. The online tool is being tested in San Francisco Bay Area, Fresno, and greater Boston.

Dominion Midstream Partners to Acquire Interests in Iroquois Gas Transmission System from National Grid, New Jersey Resources

Dominion Midstream Partners entered into agreements with affiliates of National Grid and New Jersey Resources to acquire their ownership interests in Iroquois Gas Transmission System, in exchange for the issuance of approximately 8.6 million common units in Dominion Midstream having an agreed-upon value of approximately $286.5 million.

Sacramento Municipal Utility District Awarded $600,000 Federal Grid Resilience Grant

The Department of Energy (DOE) awarded the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) $600,000 to install smart-grid technologies. The Grid Resilience Grant helps fund half of SMUD's $1.2 million Resilient Grid Initiative that is designed to make SMUD's distribution system more adaptable to major disasters and reduce the effects of climate change through the installation and operation of high-voltage switches and the implementation and operation of voltage optimization measures.

SunEdison and Dominion Partner for 420-MW Solar Project in Utah

SunEdison signed a definitive agreement with Dominion, establishing a joint venture for Four Brothers, a 420-MW DC, or 320-MW  AC, solar project in Utah, developed by SunEdison. The project is now under construction and fully financed with an expected commercial operation date of mid-2016. The Four Brothers project is contracted under long-term PPAs for 20 years with PacifiCorp.

Gas Natural Inc. Agrees to Sell its Kentucky Utility Operations

Gas Natural Inc.’s wholly owned subsidiary, Public Gas Company, signed a definitive agreement to sell all of its assets used in the operation of its Kentucky utility business to Kentucky Frontier Gas for $1.9 million in cash. The closing is subject to customary closing conditions, as well as regulatory approvals. Public Gas Company, a Kentucky corporation, annually distributes 147.4 million cubic feet within seven counties in eastern Kentucky.

Constellation and Bloom Energy to Develop 40 MW of Fuel Cell Projects

Constellation and Bloom Energy plan to develop 40 MW of Bloom Energy fuel cell projects for commercial and public sector customers in California, Connecticut, New Jersey and New York. Under the agreement, Constellation will provide equity financing and own a majority equity interest in Bloom Energy Servers at more than 170 sites for customers, including AT&T, the City of Hartford, Conn., and Walmart among others. Constellation and Bloom Energy plan to complete the installations in phases by the end of 2016.
