On February 16, it was announced that San Diego Gas & Electric was buying some nine hundred megahertz spectrum. The utility is creating a private LTE network for a falling conductor protection system. Which is so very important because the system will actually detect and de-energize falling power lines before they reach the ground, lessening wildfire risk.
This Sempra sub is apparently only getting started developing applications leveraging a secure and speedy telecom backbone. Stay tuned. A bunch of companies are helping on the buildout of the private LTE network, including Anterix, Burns & McDonnell and Nokia. Other utilities racing to build private LTE networks are Ameren and Xcel Energy.
