Utilities had traditionally based maintenance decisions on recommendations made by equipment manufacturers and our own experience using the equipment. [Reliability-Centered Maintenance] introduces a new level of precision into maintenance decisions. Now, staff evaluate the context under which a piece of equipment is operating, such as whether an asset had to be used more than usual to help meet elevated power demand, or whether similarly situated equipment experienced breakdowns.
