Lockheed Martin and Dominion Introduce New Grid Location Technology

Lockheed Martin and Dominion Resources co-developed a new smart grid technology called VirtuGrid, which will enable remote detection of power outages for faster mapping and response. VirtuGrid enables data, including voltage, power, energy readings, GPS location, phase and circuit connectivity, to be sent from the remote location to the substation over the same path as the power. The technology facilitates control and timing of remote communications with multiple types of communication networks with very low bandwidth usage.

Lockheed Martin and Victorian Wave Partners Sign Contract to Start Development of World’s Largest Wave Energy Project

Lockheed Martin signed a contract with Victorian Wave Partners Ltd. to begin developing the world's largest wave energy project announced to date. The 62.5-MW peak power wave energy generation project will be built off the coast of Victoria, Australia, using the PowerBuoy wave energy converter technology of Ocean Power Technologies (OPT). The project is scheduled to be built up in three stages, with the first stage producing approximately 2.5-MW peak power.

Microgrid Milestones

One of the most interesting trends of 2013 was the rise of microgrids. While the hype overshadows the reality of actual projects, several key developments have set the stage for growth.

U.S. Army and Lockheed Martin Commission Microgrid at Fort Bliss

U.S. Army and Lockheed Martin officials commissioned the first U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) grid-tied microgrid integrating both renewable resources and energy storage at Fort Bliss, Texas. The project was funded by the DoD’s Environmental Security Technology Certification Program. The Fort Bliss grid-tied microgrid is designed to reduce overall greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy costs while providing the capability to operate independent of the electric utility grid when needed to provide energy security.
