Echelon selected for Swedish smart grid

Echelon was selected to provide smart grid systems for the Smart Grid Gotland project, a large-scale, technology demonstration on the island of Gotland, Sweden. The project is sponsored by a joint venture between Vattenfall, Gotland Energy, ABB, Swedish National Grid, Schneider Electric, and the Royal Institute of Technology, and and is partly financed by the Swedish Energy Agency. Echelon will provide its edge control node, its control operating system (COS) -based application platform, and 3,000 advanced grid sensors, which also provide smart metering functionality.

IBM to operate Ontario’s MDM system

IBM was selected to operate Independent Electricity System Operator Ontario’s meter data management and repository (MDM/R) system with new computing infrastructure and an updated operating environment. The five-year, $68.5 million contract includes options to extend to seven or 10 years. Under the agreement, IBM will develop the overall performance of the MDM/R through new computing and networking infrastructure, disaster recovery capabilities, and operational improvements to reduce risk and costs.

GlobalCon

Presented by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) along with Host Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW), Platinum Sponsor Constellation Energy, and Silver Sponsor Hess, GLOBALCON is the northeast region’s largest energy efficiency conference and exposition and addresses new advances in energy efficiency, energy management, high performance buildings, renewables and power management technologies.

Preventing Tomorrow's Blackouts

Why transmission planners and protection engineers need to work more closely together.

Recent outages show the importance of proper transmission system design. As the grid becomes more complex, reliability requires tighter coordination.

NERC on a Wire

The reliability organization struggles with reforms, as FERC hovers.

NERC’s reliability oversight is bogged down on two fronts—standard-setting and compliance oversight. Progress depends on improving unwieldy process.

Busting the Transmission Trusts

Creative destruction is coming, and it can’t be stopped.

With Order 1000, FERC shows it’s willing to blow up uncompetitive structures, as with trustbusting under Teddy Roosevelt, and the more recent Bell breakup.

IT-OT Convergence

Breaking down silos to achieve a more enabled workforce and more informed stakeholders.

Operations are finally getting together with IT. As a result, utilities will be able to achieve a range of business goals&emdash;and serve customers better.
