Southern California Edison won the Fortnightly Top Innovator 2024 award ''Nikola Tesla Top Innovator in Artificial Intelligence'' for its Advanced Waveform Anomaly Recognition (AWARE).

PUF's Lori Burkhart: Vik, describe your innovation and its positive impact.

Vik Trehan: Our grid is evolving rapidly, and conventional methodologies and technologies will not suffice anymore. The innovation is primarily uniting existing systems, like sensor data from outage management systems, waveform recorders, system protection and meter data, and engineering impedance models, et cetera; then augmenting with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technologies to forecast the exact location of a fault.

AI/ML is a significant game changer, which enables us to drive vital insights by stitching together critical data, and then predicting precise fault locations through advanced algorithms. The advantages are numerous, including faster resolutions.
