The energy and utilities industry is scrambling for any answer to overcome the transmission line capacity issue brought on by the transition to cleaner energy. In short, more renewables sited in far-away locations means more transmissions lines are needed. Full stop.
The problem is getting transmission lines built. For a plethora of reasons, it isn't easy, and those causes have been discussed in these pages, with solutions offered, which take time. Enter FERC with its recent Order No. 8881, which takes aim squarely at what transmission is out there now, and wants it used more efficiently.
FERC's final rule will help to more efficiently utilize our nation's transmission grid and at the same time will help lower costs for consumers by improving accuracy and transparency of transmission line ratings. It is a big ask, and to explain what that all means, Public Utilities Fortnightly brought in an expert, Rob Schaerer, Senior Project Engineer at POWER Engineers.
