There is much interest by the energy and utilities industry surrounding hydrogen and much consternation too. It is still in the early stages as far as what part this gas will play in the march toward a decarbonized energy future.

Testing, pilots, studies, safety, and financial evaluations are just a few of the topics bandied about when it comes to hydrogen. It also has to be measured, especially regarding its impact on natural gas and related infrastructure, where it is being injected and mixed.

PUF turned to an award-winning expert on smart metering standardization from Itron, whose experiences around the world bear listening to on issues surrounding the business case for hydrogen. This expert, Emilio Consonni, is senior product marketing manager at Itron.

PUF's Paul Kjellander: About every four or five years over the last few decades there's renewed interest in hydrogen as a fuel. Does it seem different this time?

Emilio Consonni: I would say yes, because today we have facts. We have at least investment and plans in several areas around the world to implement hydrogen.
