Southern Company
Tom Fanning is the CEO of Southern Company.
I've had an interesting career. I've spoken with five Governors before, during or after their terms, four sitting Senators, a Secretary of Defense when I worked in the Pentagon, and over a hundred CEOs. Only a few of these folks filled the room for me. Hillary Clinton was certainly one. She captivated you in a conversation regardless of your political leaning. Tom Capps, who led Dominion Energy, was another. Though I'm reluctant to skip over Bill Johnson, Ted Craver, Errol Davis, John Rowe, and Jim Rogers, also Joe Paquette, Dick Kelly, and Paula Rosput, among the now-retired leaders of utilities.
There're a few among today's leaders, of course, at utilities and in utility regulation too. It would be impolitic to list those. But I'll break that rule, once, here. Many across our industry would mention Tom Fanning; would say he fills the room for them. So, we were fortunate, Alex Revel and I, when Fanning suggested sitting down at the recent Edison Electric Institute Financial Conference and giving PUF and you all his take on where his company and our industry are heading.
