The PUF team brings you memorable moments from APPA CEO Joy Ditto's opening remarks at the American Public Power Association's 2021 National Conference's in-person meeting June 20-23 in Orlando, Florida.
 

APPA CEO Joy Ditto: In the next few days, you'll be sharing your unique experiences with each other. I know you're humble about what you did over the last fifteen months and what you do every day, whether in a pandemic or not and you're not always eager to talk about it, particularly outside of your public power community. 

In a year that focused on celebrating unsung heroes, your efforts to keep the lights on and offer financial relief to your customers is still unsung in many ways on the national stage. Working with my team at APPA, we have sought to highlight your efforts, but we have more to do. As we move past the pandemic and the crises of last year, we must be telling and showing how public power is well-suited to meet the immense challenges ahead.

There is a danger in merely keeping your heads down and just getting the job done. You need to tell your story. Take credit for the ways you keep your community strong. Your long track records of affordability, reliability, and safety provide a strong foundation. But these traits are not an impenetrable shield from disruptive forces.
