Technical Staff
Christopher Koermer is Director of Transportation Division (Technical Staff) at the Maryland Public Service Commission.
The PUF team had a warm welcome at the PSC offices in Baltimore on the upper floors of the William Donald Schaefer building. Maryland punches well above its weight, with an expansive grid modernization portfolio, ambitious electric vehicle and charging programs, utility-scale batteries deployed as grid assets, and more, backed up by a diverse renewable generation portfolio and nuclear power at the Calvert Cliffs plant.
PUF's Lori Burkhart: How did your background lead you to the Commission?
Christopher Koermer: My interest in public safety started as early as in high school. I joined the local volunteer fire company back then and I'm still an active member today.
My first state employment began with the Maryland State Police, in the Automotive Safety Enforcement Division, which directly oversees all Maryland State Inspection Stations. The division oversees inspection standards and facilities performing inspections throughout the state for any vehicles permitted to be registered, from motorcycles to tractor-trailers.
It was with the Maryland State Police that I worked my way up into the Training Division, where I was directly involved with training division personnel, and was tasked with interpreting existing inspection standards and drafting any new regulations.
