In late January, AESP held its 31st annual conference, Charging Forward in 2021.
New, smarter rate structures and price-responsive energy technologies promise benefits to the grid, utilities, and customers. How these rates and technologies function and how customers can realize benefits is complex. Panelists shared insights into how best to communicate the value of emerging AMI-enabled smart rate structures and price-responsive technologies to residential customers. Here are excerpts on BGE's EVsmart Program, DTE Energy's SmartCurrents program, and Con Edison's Innovative Pricing Pilot.
Principal Marketing Specialist, DTE Energy, Jaclyn Young: Smart Currents combines all the benefits of a smart thermostat with a dynamic electricity rate. With Smart Currents, customers are given a free Wi-Fi enabled thermostat, the Ecobee3 lite, and DTE's dynamic peak pricing rate.
With this rate, the price of electricity varies by time of day, including a critical peak pricing component, providing customers with new opportunities to save by shifting their energy to off peak periods, as well as automatic savings when DTE adjusts the thermostat temperature by four degrees during critical peak events.
