Leadership Re-Imagined
Tatiana Roc is Vice President, Gas Business Enablement for National Grid.
National Grid's Tatiana Roc came to the AABE conference via pre-recorded message, which in a virtual conference was hardly noticeable. Roc's message was powerful as she took attendees on her journey to her most recent leadership position. Candid, refreshing, honest, are perhaps only a few fitting words that should compel you to read here every bit of what she had to say. You will take away something useful.
Tatiana Roc: How has the current movement for social justice led you to reimagine your purpose in leadership? As I watched the peaceful demonstration of social justice in Boston and the looting that took over the night of Sunday, May thirty-first, I felt frustration overcome me.
I knew what would happen next. The narrative would change. The focus would be on the looting part of the day and not the demand for social justice. I went to bed that night with my soul hurt. I woke up the next day and it was time for me to do more. I will need to be more vocal, as I looked back at my twenty years of experience in leadership, this moment felt different.
I think back to the beginning of my career as a supervisor and manager of gas operations. It is so clear, I had my fire-retardant uniform, my hard hat, my glasses. And yes, I had that good old clipboard as I walked around the plant facilities.
