Edison International
Now retired, Ted Craver was the CEO of Edison International.
At the beginning of this decade, which is winding down now, in that very different time in our industry, there was one chief executive of a large utility who envisioned our day and drove his company and indeed all of us toward that vision.
Edison International, the holding company of Southern California Edison, had a chief exec then, a former banker, who fervently believed that the electric industry's triad of goals - safe, reliable, affordable - must be expanded to a quartet with the addition of clean. Safe, reliable, affordable, clean emerged as the industry's goals, a notion that is uncontested now, though there were a few disagreements ironed out along the way.
That chief exec, now retired, Ted Craver, spent some time with Public Utilities Fortnightly, to retell the story of that important journey and his important role in leading us here.
PUF's Steve Mitnick: You've had an amazing career. What were some of the big things that you feel you did and accomplished?
Ted Craver: I'd say the more memorable things fall into one of two categories. The way life works, some things you get to initiate and some things you just have to respond to. On the respond side, I was chief financial officer during the California energy crisis of 2000-2001.
