Visiting Eversource
Steve Mitnick is President of Lines Up, Inc., Editor-in-Chief of Public Utilities Fortnightly, author of “Lines Down: How We Pay, Use, Value Grid Electricity Amid the Storm,” formerly an expert witness that testified before utility regulatory commissions of six states, the District of Columbia, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and in Canada, and a faculty member at Georgetown University teaching undergraduate microeconomics, macroeconomics and statistics. He is not even close to being eligible for Fortnightly Under Forty.
The Eversource folks drove us through booming south Boston, a construction crane on every block, I think, into a parking lot at street level. Seemed ordinary except the lot’s roof was a 345 kiloVolt substation serving the whole area. How is that even possible?
Before long the engineers took us up to this new super-resilient station in the air. They showed us all around the 345 kV and 115 kV equipment that is so far above the harbor that it would take an asteroid crashing into the earth — like the one that finished off the dinosaurs — to flood this station. Talk about climate change mitigation!
