About ten years ago, I met the indomitable Steve Mitnick while walking the halls of NARUC. In true Mitnick fashion, he was methodically networking — like a bee moving from flower to flower — engaging old friends and making new ones. There was something magnetic about this beaming, white-haired man with his easy charm and quick wit. From that first meeting, it was clear he was someone special — a born storyteller with a gift for connection.

Throughout his fifty-year career, Steve has shared his stories with an energy and authenticity that pull you in completely. Whether recounting his days at McKinsey, his time as New York’s energy “tsar,” or his leadership at a transmission company, Steve’s tales blend business insight with human warmth.

For anyone who has talked with him for publication in Public Utilities Fortnightly during his decade at the helm, you know the experience well: he draws you in like an old friend, smiling, nodding, asking questions that make you feel seen and understood. It’s never an interview — it’s a conversation.
