For the twenty-first time, the United States Energy Association held its annual meeting of the nation's energy association CEOs. The Public Utilities Fortnightly team was there, at the National Press Club, to listen to the twenty-three association CEOs and excerpt for you some of their most important remarks. Here are some, from the heads of NARUC, EPRI, American Gas Association, Smart Electric Power Alliance, National Hydropower Association, Large Public Power Council, Nuclear Energy Institute, and the Alliance to Save Energy.

 

Tony Clark, Executive Director, NARUC: "How do we ensure that new customers coming onto the system and old customers who have been on the system for a while, that there's not inappropriate cross-subsidization? But this is the wheelhouse for regulators. It's what regulators have done for over a hundred years. So, I think we're well-positioned to handle those things. But I think everyone is going into this 'eyes wide open.' This is going to be a challenging time, especially for probably the next five or ten years as we try to meet these competing demands.

The median tenure of the state commissioner in this country is about three-and-a-half or four years. I've sometimes heard it said, 'the average lifespan of a commissioner is three-and-a-half, or four years.'" [Audience laughed.]
