Eversource won the Fortnightly Top Innovator 2024 award ''Francis Upton Top Innovator in Analytics for Utility Service'' for its Early Leak Detection in High-Pressure Fluid Filled Systems.

PUF's Lori Burkhart: Describe your innovation and its positive impact.

Jing Yang: The High-Pressure Fluid-Filled (HPFF) underground transmission lines in the east Massachusetts region are critical to our operations. There are several pump plant stations with hundreds of lines connected and filled with mineral oil to maintain electric fields, cool electrical components, and provide insulation.

However, the HPFF system is at risk of fluid leaks, which could pose significant environmental hazards. That's why early leak detection is crucial, and we've leveraged operational data and engineering and statistical algorithms to address this challenge.
