Con Edison won the Fortnightly Top Innovator 2024 award ''Nancy Fitzroy Top Innovator in Environment and Safety'' for its Underground Automated Cable Splicing - Live End Cap Machine.

 

PUF's Steve Mitnick: Describe this innovation, this underground splice machine and its positive impact.

Patrick McHugh: I'm the Senior Vice President of Electric Operations and oversee the electric distribution system at Con Edison. We run the largest underground network electric distribution system in the United States.

A lot of utilities are looking to underground more parts of their system. To build resiliency, we need to put the cables underground. The weak point of the underground system is the splice.
