PUF brings a look at a General Session at this summer's NARUC Summer Policy Summit that was divided into four panels: "The Tightrope: Utility CEOs' Balancing Act." In those four panels, utility CEOs faced Commissioners and a Consumer Advocate to discuss how they balance new resource investments and grid modernization, while ensuring reliability and reasonable rates. The CEOs grappled with tough questions, including how decisions are made concerning how and when to operationalize new initiatives, and whether communication and engagement levels are adequate.

TECO Peoples Gas CEO Helen Wesley joined New York Chair Rory Christian and AARP Florida State President Ken Thomas for Tightrope Two.

 

New York Chair Rory Christian: I want to start off with a topic that we kind of touched on previously. Focus on customer outreach and communication. Everyone here has been a utility customer.

Typically, customer communication is the bill. That's the one thing we can always count on at the end of the month or every other month. I'm curious to know how you are moving forward with evolving the nature of your communication with your consumers. Due to the evolving nature of all the challenges, are there new opportunities?
