The New York Public Service Commission and New York Department of Public Service oversee a mandate in New York's Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, to cut greenhouse gas emissions forty percent by 2030 and no less than eighty-five percent by 2050 from 1990 levels. All that, while carrying on its regulatory business in the public interest. The five hundred-plus dedicated Staff of the New York Department of Public Service are up to all these tasks. They are the Staff arm of the seven-member New York Public Service Commission.

The DPS is under the leadership of CEO Rory Christian. He also is Chair of the New York PSC.


PUF's Lori Burkhart: Talk about your career and how that brought you here to the Commission.

Chair Rory Christian: I am a civil engineer by training.
I grew up wanting to build bridges, tunnels, and skyscrapers. I couldn't find the right opportunity in those areas at the start of my career, but I was fortunate to find work with a utility, KeySpan Energy, and it was through that experience that I came to know the energy sector.

And from the very beginning it was an amazing opportunity. I enjoyed the people and the knowledge gained daily from individuals who'd been in the power sector their entire careers.
