The association for the industry's military veterans, Veterans in Energy, met on the sixth of October to discuss leadership. An apropos subject for the industry's vets since those who serve in our industry and have served in the military services tend to excel as leaders. It's one of the characteristics of vets generally that have proven to be of enormous value to the country's utilities.

This meeting alas was virtual due to the pandemic. Though the promise was made that the Veterans in Energy event next March will be in Washington D.C. and will be in-person as was the tradition through 2019.

Here we excerpt from the panel discussion on vets' employee resource groups. These ERGs have played a vital role at so many utilities helping our vets reach their greatest potential in utility service.
 

Steve Johnson, UGI Utilities: One of the big challenges that I certainly face is carving out the time to spend and to build that veteran [employee resource] group. UGI utilities didn't hire me or didn't put me in this position to do solely that. I have my day job. I have my primary responsibility. 

Building the veterans group is something that the company has asked me to do and expects me to deliver. But it's certainly not part of our core business and what UGI does as a business.
