The small but mighty North Dakota Public Service Commission handles a lot in this vast agricultural and ranching state. North Dakota PSC is also in charge of weights and measures, protecting consumers by making sure they get what they pay for.


PUF: How did your background lead you to the Commission?

Steve Kahl: I'm an electrical engineer. I was brought in on August 15, 1979, as an engineer siting infrastructure. Primarily, at that time it was electric, but it was also some of the pipeline infrastructure. I did that for a number of years. I then transitioned for a short period into public utilities.

I moved into the technology section and did technology for the Commission for many years. When our previous Executive Secretary left, the Commission appointed me to this position. I'm starting my forty-third year.

John 'Jack' Schuh: I'm originally from North Dakota. I began law practice in Florida where I had some exposure to government practice.
