APPA's National Conference closed out by honoring the recipients of its 2021 awards for individual leadership. Next, Colin Hansen, Executive Director, Kansas Municipal Utilities and 2021-22 Chair, American Public Power Association, gave his remarks.
 

Executive Director, Kansas Municipal Utilities and 2021-22 Chair, American Public Power Association, Colin Hansen: Welcome to the closing session of APPA's virtual national conference. Here's hoping that next year we can get back to more normal operations in Nashville. 

My first story is about a very introverted and nerdy twenty-two-year-old, recent mechanical engineering graduate from Iowa State University, who took a position working for the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities, which is a bit interesting at the time seeing that I did not know what a municipal utility or an association was. 

In my first month on the job, I happened to get a copy of the July 1993 Public Power Magazine in the inbox of my spacious and mauve colored eight-foot by eight-foot cubicle. It was the first time that I'd heard about APPA.
