Ken Schrad is Director for Information Resources at the Virginia State Corporation Commission. Andy Farmer is Deputy Director at the Virginia State Corporation Commission.
PUF was delighted at the opportunity to travel to Richmond virtually to visit the home of the Virginia State Corporation Commission. The Commission is a unique regulatory body with authority over utilities, insurance, state-chartered financial institutions, securities, retail franchising, railroads, and well, a long laundry list. No wonder the Commission employs over six-hundred Staff.
PUF's Lori Burkhart: Ken, as Director, Division of Information Resources, what is your role at the Commission?
Ken Schrad: I have the benefit of experiencing all aspects of what the Commission does. The Commission is a news story a day. The majority are good stories about the SCC's work serving the people of the Commonwealth. Admittedly, Commission approval of a utility rate increase may not be considered good news to anyone, including the company if it did not receive all of its requested amount.
If it isn't something happening in public utilities, it's happening in the insurance, banking, or securities aspects of the Commission's work. This Commission also is the central filing office for Virginia corporate law. Any corporation or limited liability company doing business in Virginia gets its corporate charter or LLC certificate here.
