Unique Conversations
Mark Schuling is an Iowa Consumer Advocate and the new NASUCA President.
PUF's Steve Mitnick: Tell us about your new position with NASUCA.
Mark Schuling: I'm currently the Iowa Consumer Advocate and now I'm the president of NASUCA. I'd been the vice president for about a year and a half, and surprisingly, Ellen Katz, the Consumer Counsel in the state of Connecticut, took a job in the private sector and left about six months early from her position as president.
PUF: Was there an election? Did you have to campaign?
Mark Schuling: In our bylaws, it says that the vice president automatically moves up. Nobody had a choice at that point in time, other than selecting me as vice president over the last two years. But it works out well. We get together twice a year, and it's in the summertime, and then at the NARUC conference in the fall.
At our summer meeting, Ellen wasn't able to be there, and her announcement had just occurred. I ran the summer meeting, and it was an opportunity to be out there with all of our Consumer Advocates. It was a good opportunity for them to understand what the process was, and how it was going to occur.
