Municipalities in the San Francisco Bay area are joining together to form an electric buying group in anticipation of the deregulation of the California electric market. The group, the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG), will flex its collective buying power first in natural gas. But at least 20 municipalities have expressed interest in joining together to buy electricity.
Pacific Gas & Electric Co., present supplier to many of the municipalities, has indicated concern over the potential loss of customers, but says it cannot take a position until the California Public Utilities Commission decides on the new rules.
